What is a Watershed?

A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that falls within and drains off it ends up at a common outlet.

Think of when a drop of rain hits the ground. If it were to continue on the surface, flowing downstream, where would it end up? At what point does that drop find a stream? And when does that stream meet another stream?

Land uses within a given watershed can have significant impacts on how water flows through the landscape and what is carried off with it, influencing the health of our surface water, ground water, communities, and environment.

Incorporating practices in the landscape that slow water, absorb contaminants, and prevent erosion have numerous benefits including long-term agricultural sustainability, increased ecosystem biodiversity, improved flood resiliency, and protection of drinking water sources.

Focusing conservation efforts at a sub-watershed level is a proven method for successful implantation of conservation objectives with measurable results.
